Celebrating the life of

Ronald Franklin Brunson, Sr.

October 31, 1929 - April 08, 2015

Ronald Franklin Brunson, Sr.

Ronald Franklin Brunson, Sr. 85, died Wednesday April 8, 2015 at Hospice Savannah.  Ronald was born in Ridgeland, S.C. to the late Luther F. Brunson and Essie M. Brunson.  He attended and graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering.  Upon graduation he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army and served as an instructor in the U.S. Army Engineer School and later in Korea as a Company Commander in an Engineer Combat Battalion.  He was employed by the Savannah District Corps of Engineers for 34 years.  During the last seven years of his employment he served as Chief, Engineering Division.  He retired in December 1988.  During his tenure he served on many Corps regional and national engineering management committees and received numerous commendations for his accomplishments.  He was privileged to speak to engineering audiences at local, regional, and national levels on technical and managerial subjects.  He was the recipient of the Meritorious Civilian Service Award and was inducted into the Gallery of Distinguished Employees.  During his career he held membership in several technical and professional engineering societies and was a Registered Professional Engineer in the states of Georgia and South Carolina.  He was a member of the Isle of Hope Baptist Church since 1959 where he served in numerous capacities including Chairman of Deacon, Trustee and Sunday School Director.  As a hobby he enjoyed working in his workshop restoring antique furniture and building new furniture.  After his retirement he served as a volunteer with the Ronald McDonald House Charities for several years.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his loving and devoted wife and best friend of 42 years, Margaret Carr Brunson; an infant son, James Alan Brunson; a daughter in law, Marcy Brunson; an infant grandson, Matthew Brunson and a brother, Otis Brunson.  After Margaret’s death in 1996, at the suggestion of his daughter in law Edith, Ronald authored and published a book for his family and descendants entitled “Our Glorious Years”, a true story which described the growing up years of Margaret and Ronald, their courtship and marriage, the raising of their family, and the wonderful years he and she spent together.

He is survived by sons and daughters in law, Frank and Leah Brunson of Savannah; Steve and Lisa Brunson of Statesboro; and Greg and Edith Brunson of Savannah; a sister, Virginia McTeer; and nine grandchildren; Jonathan, James, Thomas, Nate, Phillip, Katie, Sam, Frankie III, and Marian Margaret.

Visitation will be Friday, April 10, 2015 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Saturday April 11, 2015 at the Isle of Hope Baptist Church.  Interment will follow at 3:00 pm in the Ridgeland Cemetery in Ridgeland, S.C.      Grandsons will serve as Pall Bearers.

Remembrances may be made to the Isle of Hope Baptist Church Building Fund, 22 Rose Ave., Savannah, GA 31406 or Ronald McDonald House Charities, 4710 Waters Ave., Savannah, GA 31404.

GUEST BOOK

So very sorry for your loss. May God bless and keep you and comfort you in this time of mourning.

- Richard Hinely family, Savannah, GA

I wish to express my deepest sympathy in the loss of your father Ronald. You will remember me as the father of Sarelle Smith who grew up with the three of you Brunson boys at Isle of Hope. Ronald and your mother Margaret were close friends of ours (Sara Nell was my wife at that time). I lost her in 1989 and Sarelle in 2007. I remarried in 1990 to Pearl Waters a widow that I had known in Savannah prior to our moving to Isle of Hope. We had moved to Jacksonville in 1988 with my employment. Pearl and her family had moved from Savannah to Jacksonville in about 1970 and she lost her husband after moving to Jacksonville. With that I hope that that you remember us from our time at Isle of Hope. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time of your great loss. We would love to be with you for the visitation and the service at Isle of Hope Baptist Church Friday night and Saturday but we are unable to do very much traveling at our age. I am 90 this year. But do remember that we loved you folks and Ronald will be greatly missed.

- William I Smith Jr, Penney Farms, FL

I have so many great memories of spending time with Uncle Ronald and Aunt Margaret - especially when we visited Savannah. I feel lucky to have had them both in my life for many reasons. I will miss Uncle Ronald and of course will continue to be reminded of him often. Thinking of all the Brunsons during this time.

Greg, Steve and Frank, I wanted you to know my memories of your father are those of a gentle and talented man. I will always remember him working in the shop off the garage and the smell of his pipe. You and your families are in my prayers. God Bless you all. Mike
